Chiesa Nuova, Baroque church in Assisi, Italy.
Chiesa Nuova is a baroque church in Assisi featuring a floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross with a central dome. Four smaller domes extend from each arm of the structure, creating an interior space with multiple focal points.
The building was constructed starting in 1615 with funds from Spanish King Philip III on the site of Francis of Assisi's family home.
The interior walls display frescoes by Cesare Sermei and Giacomo Giorgetti depicting scenes from the lives of Saint Francis and Saint Clare. These paintings shape the atmosphere and tell stories of the saints who transformed Assisi.
The church is accessible during daytime hours split across the morning and afternoon. Opening hours are extended in warmer months but reduced slightly in winter.
The first stone pillar contains a sealed room with a grating where Francis's father once confined him. This space directly connects to a pivotal moment that shaped Francis's path and explains the church's location.
