Museo Civico e Foro Romano

The Museo Civico e Foro Romano is an archaeological museum and Roman forum in Assisi that displays Roman artifacts including urns, inscriptions, and statues. The collection is housed in the crypt of a former church in the city center and presents finds from different periods of Roman occupation.

Ancient Asisium was an important settlement during Roman times and left significant traces throughout the city. Excavations in the 19th century beneath Piazza del Comune uncovered Roman structures that confirmed the site as a major Roman center.

The site preserves the name of ancient Asisium and shows how deeply Roman culture shaped this region. Visitors can observe how Romans lived here and organized their daily affairs.

The museum area sits directly beneath the city's central square and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should know the site is underground with stairs leading down, so comfortable shoes are advisable.

A glass walkway guides visitors over original Roman floor tiles and offers a view of an ancient courthouse. This tribunal was where Roman judges made their decisions, and traces of their work remain visible on site today.
