Rocca Maggiore, Medieval fortress on Asio hill in Assisi, Italy

The stone castle consists of a square layout with a central keep, multiple towers, and fortified walls overlooking the Umbrian valley and Assisi.

Cardinal Gil Albornoz initiated the reconstruction of the fortress in 1362 over ancient German fortifications after its destruction during a 1198 uprising.

The fortress represents medieval military architecture with elements from different periods, including the 15th-century polygonal tower and entrance door with papal coats of arms.

The castle opens daily from 10:00 AM, with extended hours during summer months and reduced schedules in winter, offering regular guided tours in multiple languages.

Emperor Frederick II spent part of his childhood in this fortress until age four, when local citizens expelled him during a revolt against imperial control.
