Chiesa di San Giuliano

Chiesa di San Giuliano is a Gothic church in Ferrara featuring tall, pointed windows and a facade with decorated spires in relief. The entrance displays carved images of Saint Gabriel and the Virgin with the Christ Child.

The original parish building was demolished in 1385 to make room for Castello Estense. The current structure was reconstructed and completed by 1405 at its present location.

The church held special altars dedicated to local trade guilds, with innkeepers, jewelers, fishmongers, and butchers each maintaining their own sacred space. These altars show how craftspeople and merchants wove themselves into the religious life of the city.

The church is located at Piazza della Repubblica 68 next to Castello Estense and is within easy walking distance of the city center. Since it sits adjacent to the castle, visiting it works well as part of exploring the surrounding area.

The facade displays an unusual relief showing Saint Julian the Hospitaller unknowingly killing his parents while they sleep. This distinctive scene with its dramatic story sets it apart from typical religious scenes seen elsewhere.
