Sala Estense, Historical theatre in central Ferrara, Italy
Sala Estense is a theatre in central Ferrara featuring a decorated main hall with stalls and an upper gallery adorned in late Art Nouveau style. The space accommodates around 288 spectators across its multiple levels for various performances.
Built in 1476 by Ercole I d'Este as a court chapel named Chiesa Nuova, the building originally housed the remains of Este family members. Over centuries it was transformed into a public performance venue.
Regular screenings and live performances fill the calendar with films, music concerts, and theatrical productions that reflect local traditions. The stage hosts a mix of professional and community-based shows throughout the year.
The theatre is situated at Piazza Municipale in the heart of Ferrara and is easily reached on foot. Visitors should check the programme beforehand as events vary throughout the year.
Two statues of Ferrara's patron saints, San Giorgio and San Maurelio, were created by sculptor Francesco Vidoni in 1835 and stand beside the historic entrance. These sculptures are an often-overlooked detail that catches the eye upon arrival.
