Chiesa di San Francesco

The Chiesa di San Francesco in Mazara del Vallo is a single-nave church with a plastered baroque facade punctuated by tall pilasters. The main entrance features a portal designed and executed in 1730 as a significant architectural focal point.

The building began as a Norman Gothic temple in the 11th century and was transformed into its present Baroque form starting in 1680 under Monsignor Francesco Maria Grifeo. This major renovation fundamentally changed its visual character.

The interior displays ornate stucco work and frescoes that reflect the artistic tastes of the Baroque period. You can see how local craftsmen created decorative elements throughout the space.

The church sits in Piazza San Francesco in central Mazara del Vallo and is easy to reach on foot. Underground chambers lie beneath the building and can be visited during standard opening hours.

A crypt beneath the church dates to the 3rd century and originally served as a refuge during difficult periods. This hidden chamber tells a story much older than the visible building above it.
