Église Sant'Arcangelo a Baiano

Sant'Arcangelo a Baiano is a religious building in Naples' historic center with a plain facade and a central floor layout. The interior contains side chapels arranged in a straightforward manner that reflects the traditional design of such structures.

The structure originated in the 6th century when founded by monastic communities. It underwent major reconstruction in the 13th century during the reign of Charles I of Anjou, when it acquired its baroque character.

This place once served as a gathering space for the local community, housing artworks that reflected the neighborhood's devotion and taste. The empty interior today tells the story of how religious spaces shaped daily life in the historic center.

The site is not currently open to visitors due to the need for extensive restoration work. The attached monastery has been converted into apartments and is likewise off-limits to tourists.

The attached monastery was shut down in 1577 after its inhabitants violated monastic rules. This episode caught the attention of later writers including Benedetto Croce and Stendhal, who documented the story.
