Castle of Santo Stefano d'Aveto

Castle of Santo Stefano d'Aveto is a fortress with four angular bastions rising above Piazza Domenico Livellara in the Ligurian Apennines. The structure combines a central tower with stone walls and fortified sections built to defend the mountain settlement.

The fortress began as a simple defensive tower and underwent major reconstruction after 1547 when Antonio Doria took control during a period of political change in Genoa. This transformation marks its shift from purely military use to a noble residence.

The original defensive tower was built with remarkable wall thickness of roughly 4 to 4.5 meters, as documented records from the 1500s confirm. Such heavy construction was necessary to withstand the siege warfare common in that era.
