Forte San Mattia

Forte San Mattia is a military fort situated on the northern hills of Verona with dry moats, central caponier defenses, and tuff stone walls laid out to follow the terrain. The irregular layout adapts the structure to the mountainous landscape rather than imposing a rigid geometric pattern.

The fort was built in 1843 under the command of General Franz von Scholl and Michael von Maly as part of Verona's defensive network during Austrian rule. This period saw the construction of several fortifications across the hills surrounding the city.
