Forte di San Giorgio, Seaside fortress in Capraia Isola, Italy.
Forte di San Giorgio is a fortified structure built on volcanic rock on the island of Capraia, positioned approximately 100 meters above sea level. The fortress commands views across the water toward nearby islands and the open Mediterranean.
Genoese builders constructed this defensive structure in 1540 following pirate raids that destroyed an earlier settlement. That earlier location had held a Pisan fortification dating to the 12th century.
The fortress represents Mediterranean military architecture of the Renaissance period and holds status as an Italian National Heritage monument.
Access to the site involves walking along a path that descends toward the shoreline. Visitors should prepare for uneven surfaces and exposed areas that require careful footing.
A major landslide during the 19th century damaged the eastern section and left marks visible on the walls today. Visitors can still see how this natural event altered the fortress's shape and layout.
