Bergamo Funicular railway Upper Town - Lower Town

The Bergamo funicular links the upper medieval town with the lower modern district, completing the journey in roughly two minutes. The cable railway travels approximately 240 meters while climbing some 85 meters in elevation.

This railway began operations in 1887 with steam-powered engines, serving as a key transport link between the separated districts. Over the decades, it was updated with new technology while maintaining its essential role as a swift connection.

The upper station at Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe marks a historical location where shoe merchants conducted their trade during the 15th century.

The ride is brief and straightforward, with frequent departures throughout the day. Both stations connect directly to local buses and other public transport options in the city.

The two tracks have different lengths, with one side measuring about 240 meters and the other about 234 meters, revealing an asymmetrical design. This unusual arrangement allows the cars to adjust to the steep hillside.
