Gibil Gabib

Gibil Gabib is an archaeological site on a mountain near Caltanissetta with excavated structures, defensive walls, and ancient pottery from the Bronze Age. The artifacts found here span different periods and reveal how people lived and organized their community over time.

The site was settled during the Castelluccio culture of the 6th century BC, a Bronze Age period in Sicily. Extensive excavations between 1950 and 1984 uncovered major structures and artifacts that revealed the community's development.

The terracotta statues and religious objects found here show that sacred rituals took place within the settlement. These items reveal how the ancient inhabitants practiced their spiritual beliefs.

The site sits on a hillside south of the city and has uneven terrain in some areas. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for walking on irregular ground.

Two burial grounds at the base of the mountain contain red-figure pottery that shows Greek influence on local burial customs. This blend of local and Greek styles is rare evidence of cultural exchange in the ancient Mediterranean world.
