Lake of Arpy, lake in Italy
Lac d'Arpy is a glacial lake near Morgex in the Aosta Valley, situated in a mountain basin at about 2000 meters in elevation. The water changes color from blue to green depending on light conditions and reflects the surrounding peaks clearly on calm days.
The lake formed thousands of years ago through glacial action that carved out the mountain basin. This ancient glaciation shaped the entire landscape of the Aosta Valley, leaving behind the steep slopes and glacial features visible today.
The lake serves as a gathering point for those seeking solitude in the mountains, reflecting how alpine communities value connection with high-altitude nature. Local practices around the area show respect for the landscape, with visitors traditionally bringing their own provisions to preserve the site's simplicity.
The trail begins at a free parking area near the Genzianella restaurant close to Morgex and follows a marked forest path. The route covers about three kilometers and takes roughly one hour, remaining mostly level and accessible for families with children and people with varying mobility needs.
The reflection of Mont Blanc on the lake's surface is considered particularly photogenic by visitors and is often described as one of the finest views of the mountain. This perspective is possible from few other locations in the region and makes the site prized by photographers.
