Lake of Arpy, lake in Italy
Lake of Arpy is a glacial lake in the Aosta Valley in northwestern Italy, sitting in a mountain basin at around 6,560 ft (2,000 m) above sea level. The water shifts between shades of blue and green depending on the light, and on still days the surrounding peaks are reflected clearly on the surface.
The lake was formed thousands of years ago when glaciers carved out the mountain basin and then retreated, leaving water to collect in the hollow. The same glacial forces shaped the broader valley, creating the steep walls and rounded basin that give the whole area its current form.
The lake sits in a hollow ringed by meadows and conifers, drawing walkers who want a quiet spot at altitude. Visitors tend to bring their own food and water, as there are no facilities at the water's edge.
The trail starts at a free parking area near the Genzianella restaurant close to Morgex and follows a marked path through the forest. The route is mostly flat, making it a good option for families with children or anyone who prefers an easier walk.
From the shore, the Mont Blanc massif is visible at a distance that allows it to reflect fully on the water, a view that few other easily reached spots in the valley can offer. Photographers seek out this angle, especially on calm mornings when the surface is still.
