Châtelard Castle

Chatelard Castle is a Gothic Revival castle in La Salle in the Aosta Valley region, standing at around 1,160 meters elevation. The structure features a characteristic circular tower that is typical of regional fortification architecture.

Construction began around 1243 under Bishop Rodolphe Grossi, with first written records dating from 1248. These early decades show the strategic importance of the site for controlling the Alpine region.

The castle shows a blend of Italian and French building styles that reflect the cross-border influences of the Aosta Valley. Visitors can see this mixture directly in the stonework and overall shape of the structure.

The site sits in the Pennine Alps and is best reached by hiking trails that start from La Salle. Visitors should bring proper footwear and gear since weather can change quickly in the mountains.

The ruin can only be viewed from outside today, but mobile applications offer detailed 3D reconstructions to see how the interior originally looked. This technology lets visitors fully understand the medieval structure without needing excavations.
