Lago della Ninfa, Mountain lake in Sestola, Italy
Lago della Ninfa is a mountain lake sitting at roughly 1500 meters elevation on the northeastern slopes of Monte Cimone, surrounded by beech and conifer forests. The lake bottom is paved with asphalt and its water level is maintained by an artificial fountain system.
The lake was originally called Lago Budaloni before receiving its current name in 1928 when a mountain refuge was built near its shores. This change marked the beginning of its transformation into a modern recreational destination.
The lake holds a place in local mountain folklore as a location where a water nymph once drew hunters and shepherds to these high slopes. The legend remains part of how people understand and speak about this remote alpine setting.
The location is best accessed on foot, as roads at this elevation become snow-covered during winter months. Visitors should bring warm clothing and sturdy footwear, since weather at this altitude can change quickly.
The lake bed was sealed with asphalt after natural vegetation was removed – an unusual engineering choice for an alpine lake. This modification allowed the water level to be controlled artificially and made the site usable for winter tourism.
