Libro Aperto, Mountain summit in Fiumalbo, Italy.
Libro Aperto is a mountain group in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, made up of two main peaks: Monte Rotondo and Monte Belvedere. The two summits are linked by a saddle and together form a recognizable ridge that is clearly visible from the surrounding valleys.
The mountain group sits on the historical border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. This position made it a natural dividing line for centuries, separating the lands draining toward the Tyrrhenian Sea from those draining toward the Adriatic.
The name "Libro Aperto" means "open book" in Italian, a reference to the way the two peaks face each other like the pages of a book left open. This shape is easy to recognize when looking up from the valley below.
The ascent usually starts from Fiumalbo or nearby villages, passing through forest before opening onto higher ground. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended, as conditions on the ridge can change quickly.
The slopes around the summits host white fir, red fir, beech, and mountain maple growing side by side, which is relatively unusual at this altitude. This mix of tree species can be observed gradually as you climb through the forest on the way up.
