Alpe Tre Potenze, Mountain summit in Tuscany, Italy
Alpe Tre Potenze is a mountain summit in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, sitting on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. The peak is surrounded by open pastures on its upper slopes, while the lower flanks are covered by dense forest.
The mountain has long marked the border between the regions of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, a boundary that goes back to medieval times. Communities on both sides of the ridge relied on its high pastures for summer grazing, which sometimes led to disputes over land use.
The name Tre Potenze means "three powers" in Italian, referring to the three municipalities that meet at this summit. Standing at the top, a visitor is literally at the point where three different territories come together.
The summit is reached by marked trails starting from villages on both the Tuscan and Emilian sides, and some basic mountain know-how is helpful for the upper section. The best time to go is between late spring and early autumn, as snow can remain on the higher ground well into the year.
Although the summit sits administratively in Tuscany, it is actually easier to approach from the Emilian side, which surprises many visitors who expect to start from the Tuscan valleys. On clear days, the view from the top takes in Monte Cimone, the highest point of the northern Apennines.
