Monte Gomito, Mountain summit in Abetone Cutigliano, Italy.
Monte Gomito is a mountain summit in the Tuscan Apennines, sitting at 1,890 meters (about 6,200 ft), within the municipality of Abetone Cutigliano. It has four peaks arranged close together in a roughly triangular shape, with the central one rising noticeably higher than the others.
The area around Monte Gomito has long served as a crossing point between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna before it was developed for winter sports in the 20th century. Ski runs and lift infrastructure were built in the second half of that century, turning the summit into a destination for mountain visitors.
In summer, the mountain draws walkers who follow marked trails through open meadows and wooded slopes. In winter, skiers from Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna fill the runs, giving the area a strong seasonal rhythm shared by people from both sides of the Apennines.
The area is accessible by lift in winter and on foot via marked trails in summer, so the experience changes considerably depending on the season. Clear days offer the best conditions for taking in the views from the top.
From the central peak, on a very clear day, it is possible to see both the Tuscan islands to the west and the Alps to the north at the same time. This double view in opposite directions is rare for a summit in the Apennines.
