Santa Chiara, Baroque monastery in Nocera Inferiore, Italy.
Santa Chiara is a baroque monastery located at the foot of San Pantaleone hill in Nocera Inferiore, with a classical portal facing State Road 18. The complex includes a church with adjoining spaces and houses a monastic community area alongside historical collections.
The Poor Clares order founded this monastery in 1283 on this Campania site. In its early years the complex was damaged by a landslide, yet the monastery survived and continued to develop.
The church interior holds frescoes and artworks from Naples that show how the community expressed itself artistically over centuries. These decorations tell of the religious and artistic tastes of the people who prayed and lived here.
The location at the foot of a hill with access to a main state road makes it easy to reach, especially when visiting other sites in the area. The train station is within walking distance, making it simple to arrive by public transport.
Restoration work in an old cellar area uncovered a hidden 15th-century fresco that had been lost to time. This discovery led to the creation of a small exhibition space with historical objects on site.
