Monte Popera, Mountain summit in Dolomites, Italy
Monte Popera is a mountain summit in the Dolomites that reaches 3046 meters and features steep rock faces with extended hiking paths crisscrossing the terrain. The landscape shows the typical appearance of the northern Dolomite range, with rocky passages and open mountain slopes.
The peak received its German name Hochbrunnerschneide from early Alpine explorers who mapped the Sexten Dolomites region during the 19th century as mountaineering began to develop. These surveys were part of broader efforts to open the mountain region for climbing activity.
The summit carries a German name reflecting its location in South Tyrol's mixed cultural landscape, and local climbers maintain traditional stone cairns that mark the route. These simple rock piles serve as guideposts that have helped walkers navigate safely across the exposed sections for many years.
The climb starts from Moso at around 1370 meters and requires several hours of hiking over steep sections and open mountain terrain. Good footwear and acclimatization to altitude are helpful, especially for the exposed passages near the summit.
It is the only peak above 3000 meters in the Three Peaks of the Dolomites that can be reached through less technical climbing routes. This makes it an accessible choice for climbers seeking a high mountain experience without needing extreme technical skills.
