Monte Ponteranica

Monte Ponteranica, Mountain summit in Lombardy, Italy

Monte Ponteranica is a mountain summit in the Orobie Alps featuring three distinct peaks spread along its main ridge. The southern slopes appear gentler and broader compared to the steeper northern side, with natural water pools scattered along the upper passages.

The mountain held strategic importance during World War I, with military structures built near the Verrobbio Pass. These remains reveal how the high terrain was used as a defensive position during the conflict.

For centuries, local herders have grazed livestock on the broad alpine pastures when weather permits. This seasonal practice remains visible in the landscape today and shapes how people interact with the mountain throughout the year.

The route starts from Ca' San Marco and follows trail 40 or a carriage road from Mezzoldo through switchback sections. The final approach to the western summit crosses rocky ground and requires steady footing, especially when conditions turn wet or windy.

A long southern ridge connects this peak to Monte Colombarolo, passing through natural water pools and varied rock formations. This ridge traverse offers an unusual way to link two separate mountain areas while crossing open terrain.
