Pietro Doderlein, Natural history museum in Palermo, Italy.

The museum exhibits over 5000 specimens arranged in phylogenetic order, including fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates from the Mediterranean region.

Professor Pietro Doderlein established this zoological collection in 1863 after his appointment as chair of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at the University of Palermo.

The institution maintains scientific collections that document the evolution of zoological studies in Sicily during the nineteenth century through preserved specimens and anatomical preparations.

Located at Via Archirafi 16, the museum opens Monday through Saturday from 8:45 AM to 1:15 PM and Sundays from 9:45 AM to 1:15 PM.

The museum houses 1100 Mediterranean fish specimens preserved through a secret chemical treatment developed by Doderlein, with the formula now lost to time.
