Palazzo della Sapienza, Renaissance palace in Pisa, Italy

Palazzo della Sapienza is a three-story Renaissance palace in Pisa that spans an entire block near Lungarno Pacinotti. The building features a symmetrical facade opening onto a white internal courtyard from the 16th century, surrounded by arcade-supported galleries.

Lorenzo de Medici commissioned the construction in 1486 to centralize educational facilities, and Cosimo I de Medici completed the project and reopened the university in 1543. The building played a central role in the city's academic development for centuries afterward.

The Faculty of Law and University Library building stands as a center of academic life, hosting numerous exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year.

The building now houses a university library accessible during weekday hours and features multiple entry points to manage visitor flow. Plan your visit for morning hours when the space tends to be less crowded.

The building underwent extensive restoration following a strong earthquake in 2012 and reopened in 2018 with reinforced structural improvements. The modern seismic safety measures are invisibly integrated into the fabric of this historic structure.
