Piramidi di Zone, Regional nature reserve in Province of Brescia, Italy.
The Piramidi di Zone are earth pyramids in the Province of Brescia, formed by columns of compacted earth and pebbles each topped by a protective stone cap. They rise from the hillside terrain near Lake Iseo, arranged in groups across a wooded slope.
The earth pyramids began forming after the last ice age, when glaciers left behind loose material that rain slowly carved over thousands of years. The protected area was officially established in 1984 to safeguard the site from further disturbance.
The Church of San Giorgio at the trailhead displays medieval frescoes that visitors can see up close. This small church once served as a spiritual reference point for the surrounding villages and remains well kept today.
A circular trail winds through the reserve and allows visitors to see the columns from multiple angles. The ground is uneven throughout, so sturdy shoes are advisable, and an entry fee applies for visitors above a certain age.
The protective stones sitting on top of each column were carried and deposited by glaciers from far away, not sourced locally. Without these caps, the columns beneath would erode at the same rate as the surrounding ground.
