Acquerino reserve, State nature reserve in Sambuca Pistoiese, Italy.
Acquerino reserve is a protected natural area in the Apennines above Sambuca Pistoiese, stretching between 880 and 1300 meters in elevation. The landscape consists of broad beech forests, conifer woods, and mountain meadows crossed by several small streams.
The reserve began taking shape in the 1930s when the State Forestry Corps started reforestation programs with Douglas firs. These efforts transformed previously bare areas into the dense forests that now define the landscape.
The place takes its character from the mountain forests and mountain streams that define it. Visitors can experience how local life has historically relied on these natural features as they walk through the protected land.
Visitors can explore the reserve on marked paths, with the Environmental Education Center offering guided walks. Those spending longer hours will find refreshments and rest at the Faggione delle Valli shelter.
A single beech tree in Lungomano has a crown spreading across nearly 600 square meters (6400 square feet), making it exceptionally broad and old. This ancient specimen shows how mighty individual trees can grow in this forest.
