The reserve encompasses 4,202 hectares of diverse terrain, ranging from 450 to 2,793 meters above sea level, featuring glacial valleys and limestone gorges.

This protected area, established by ministerial decree in 1983, became an integral part of Maiella National Park in 1991 to strengthen regional conservation efforts.

Ancient caves within the rocky walls of the gorges reveal human settlements dating from the Bronze Age through Roman times, including shelters for hermits.

The Carabinieri Biodiversity Department of Pescara manages the reserve, which remains open year-round with marked trails for exploring different elevation zones.

The reserve contains specific botanical zones reflecting four distinct environmental types: Central European, Sub-Atlantic, Mediterranean-mountain, and Alpine ecosystems.
