Blockhaus, Mountain peak in Caramanico Terme, Italy
Blockhaus is a mountain peak in the Abruzzo region that rises to 2,143 meters and forms part of the Maiella massif within the central Apennine range. Multiple marked trails lead to the summit from different starting points across the surrounding valleys.
The peak received its name from military fortifications built on the summit during World War II. Concrete structures from that era remain visible on the ridge today.
The mountain paths around Blockhaus connect to ancient shepherd routes that generations of Abruzzo inhabitants used for seasonal livestock movement, shaping how the valley is experienced.
Hiking to the summit requires moderate mountain walking experience and there is a mountain shelter, Rifugio Marcello Di Marco, along the way for breaks and rest. The best time to visit is from May to October when the trails are snow and ice-free.
The summit sits on the border of two Italian provinces, Chieti and Pescara, which means different access routes and contrasting landscapes appear on each side. This makes climbing from either direction a distinctly different experience.
