Riserva naturale Foci dello Stella, protected area in Italy (EUAP0979)
The Riserva naturale Foci dello Stella is a protected natural area at the mouth of the Stella river where it enters the Marano Lagunare lagoon, covering about 1,377 hectares of reed beds, water channels, and mudflats. The landscape is crisscrossed by a network of winding waterways that open onto shallow water perfect for resting birds and migrating species.
The reserve was established in 1996 to protect this unique river delta environment and the bird populations that depend on it. The area has a long fishing tradition that shaped the landscape, and this heritage continues alongside the reserve's conservation goals today.
The name refers to the Stella river mouth and the traditional fishers' huts called casoni that have stood here for generations. These wooden and reed structures dot the landscape and show how local people have adapted their lives to work with this lagoon environment.
Visitors can explore the area by boat, canoe, or kayak to discover hidden channels winding through the reed beds. Visitor centers nearby offer maps and information, while guided tours are available for those wanting deeper insight into the wildlife and bird watching opportunities.
A traditional fishing balance scale called Bepi's bilancia still operates here, demonstrating the old hand-fishing techniques of local fishers. Visitors can watch this working tool in action and taste freshly caught fish dishes, experiencing authentic local fishing practices.
