Riserva naturale guidata Zompo lo Schioppo, Regional nature reserve in Morino, Italy.
Riserva naturale guidata Zompo lo Schioppo is a regional nature reserve on the eastern slopes of the Ernici mountains, featuring an approximately 80-meter waterfall and extensive beech forests. The terrain combines wooded hillsides and rocky outcrops, with the waterfall forming the focal point for visitors.
The area gained attention in the 19th century when writer Alexandre Dumas mentioned its waterfall in his works and noted the impressive sounds it produced. Over time, the region maintained its importance as a natural landmark and eventually received formal protection as a reserve.
The name comes from local dialect and refers to the sound created when water strikes the rocks below the falls. The falls have long been a place where people from the area sought out the natural power and mood that the cascading water creates.
The area is relatively accessible and has a camping area with facilities for tents and RVs that serves as a starting point for hiking. Visitors should expect trails of different difficulty levels and should wear sturdy footwear and bring weather protection.
The waterfall has a distinctive characteristic: water volume varies significantly depending on annual rainfall patterns, making each visit a different experience. In wetter years the water crashes down with greater force, while in drier periods a gentler display takes shape.
