Hermitage of Santa Maria del Cauto, Romanesque hermitage in Morino, Italy.
The Hermitage of Santa Maria del Cauto is a Romanesque religious structure situated at 1,173 meters elevation near the border between Abruzzo and Lazio regions. The building sits within the Zompo lo Schioppo Nature Reserve, surrounded by mountainous and forested terrain.
The hermitage is first documented in 1174 through a dispute between its monastic community and the canons of San Giovanni Church in Celano. This record shows it was already an established religious center by that time.
The interior walls display medieval frescoes showing scenes from Saint Catherine of Alexandria's life and a portrait of Saint Clement of Rome. These religious images reveal the spiritual devotion that developed at this remote location.
Visiting requires a multi-hour hike starting from Morino along trail 602b through the nature reserve with significant elevation gain. The route demands good physical fitness and proper hiking equipment for the steep mountain terrain.
The building incorporates natural rock formations, with portions carved directly into the stone. A barrel-vaulted ceiling and small apse are cut directly into the rocky face, giving the structure its distinctive physical character.
