Riserva naturale integrale delle Tre Cime del Monte Bondone, protected area in Italy (EUAP0405)
The Riserva naturale integrale delle Tre Cime del Monte Bondone is a protected area near Trento featuring three distinctive mountain peaks that shape the landscape. The reserve includes extensive forests of spruce and larch, flower-filled alpine meadows, several mountain streams, and a large high-altitude bog.
The area was once a hunting reserve of a prince-bishop who later left it to alpine communities. In more recent times, it became a protected nature reserve in 1968.
The reserve's name comes from the three mountain peaks that define the landscape and are recognizable from far away. Local communities have maintained a long tradition of respecting and protecting this alpine territory, with stories and legends about mountain life that remain part of village culture today.
Access to the reserve is free and possible year-round, with marked hiking trails of varying difficulty levels. Winter visits require snowshoes or specialized equipment, while the visitor center at Viote offers free orientation help and seasonal guided tours.
A rare wildcat was documented in 2018 using camera traps, showing that these shy animals can establish themselves at these high elevations. This discovery surprised biologists and highlighted the growing ability of the species to adapt to alpine habitats.
