Rifugio Bozzi, Mountain hut in Ponte di Legno, Italy.
Rifugio Bozzi is a mountain hut inside Stelvio National Park, set at around 2,478 feet (2,478 m) in the Ortles-Cevedale range near Ponte di Legno. It offers sleeping quarters and meals for hikers and climbers passing through this part of the Alps.
The area around the hut was a front line during World War I, when Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces fought each other across these high passes. The traces of that conflict are still visible in the surrounding terrain.
The hut sits inside Stelvio National Park, where hikers from across the region gather after long days on the trail. The kitchen serves dishes rooted in Lombard mountain cooking, giving the stop a strong local character.
The hut is reached by following CAI trail 52 from Case di Viso, a well-marked path that does not require technical skills for experienced walkers. Starting early in the day is a good idea, since conditions at this elevation can change fast.
Close to the hut, a network of WWI trenches and fortifications has been turned into an open-air museum that visitors can walk through on their own. This outdoor site is rarely crowded and gives a direct sense of what mountain warfare looked like.
