The Rifugio Casera Pramosio is a mountain hut in the Carnic Alps at roughly 1,520 meters with stone masonry walls, two floors, and a bar area. The building offers around 20 beds and operates simultaneously as a working dairy farm where cheese is produced.
The hut underwent major renovations in the early 1970s to create overnight accommodation and a dining operation at high elevation. This transformation marked the shift from purely farm-focused use to combined tourism and agriculture.
Local keepers continue traditional cheese making on the meadow, inviting visitors to observe their daily work and taste products made on site. This craft shapes the character of the place and transforms it into something more than just a stopping point.
The refuge is accessible from June through September via several marked hiking trails that are easy to follow. Visitors should expect variable mountain weather and bring layers, even during apparently mild seasons.
The site sits in a natural grass bowl beneath Creta di Timau peak near the Austrian border. Mountain troops historically trained on skis in this region, leaving traces of a military past that few visitors notice today.
