Rifugio Città di Busto, Mountain hut in Formazza, Italy.
Rifugio Città di Busto is a mountain hut at 2480 meters elevation in the Lepontine Alps with a stone exterior and wooden interior structures. The shelter accommodates up to 47 guests in rooms ranging from 3 to 12 beds each.
The hut was begun in 1926 and completed in 1927, preserving its original stone structure through the decades. Significant renovations occurred after World War II and continued into recent years.
The kitchen serves regional dishes, with polenta and local Alpine cheese being central to meals shared among guests. These ingredients connect visitors to the mountain traditions practiced in the surrounding valleys.
Access is easiest from June through September, when the shelter provides meals, hot water, and electricity to guests. Visitors should prepare for cold nights even during summer months at this elevation.
The shelter serves as a launch point for climbing several peaks over 3000 meters that mark the Italian-Swiss border. The Blindenhorn at 3375 meters stands out as one of the highest summits accessible from this base.
