Scale di Napoli, Historic stairways in Naples, Italy

Naples features a network of over 200 stone stairways connecting different areas of the city, forming intricate paths between hillside districts and coastal zones.

The construction of these monumental stairways began in the 16th century during Naples' expansion beyond its walls, often built over ancient streams and water sources.

The Pedamentina stairway, with its 414 steps leading from San Martino Monastery to the historic center, represents the traditional Neapolitan way of urban connection.

These stone pathways serve as essential shortcuts for residents, connecting the Vomero district to downtown areas through routes inaccessible to vehicles.

The Petraio steps, named after the rocky terrain they traverse, date from the 16th century and provide views across the Bay of Naples.
