Stadio del Tennis, building in Rome, Italy
Stadio del Tennis is a tennis facility in Rome, located within the Foro Italico sports complex on the banks of the Tiber river. The central arena has tiered seating for spectators, while smaller courts around it are used for training and warm-up sessions.
The facility was built in the 1930s as part of the Foro Italico, which was originally called Foro Mussolini. After the Second World War the complex was repurposed and has hosted the Rome international tennis tournament since 1930.
The Stadio del Tennis sits inside the Foro Italico complex, where marble statues and mosaic floors from the 1930s are still visible around the grounds. Visitors who arrive for tennis often end up walking past these decorative elements without expecting them.
The grounds are easiest to reach on foot from the riverbank or through the wider Foro Italico complex. During the main spring tournament, usually held in May, the area gets very busy and arriving early in the day makes moving around much easier.
The main arena at Stadio del Tennis has a retractable roof that was added over time to allow play in bad weather. This makes it one of the few clay-court tennis arenas in the world with such a cover.
