Teatro dell'Elfo, Contemporary theater and theatrical company in central Milan, Italy.
Teatro dell'Elfo is a contemporary theater in Milan, located on Corso Buenos Aires, with three auditoriums named after Shakespeare, Fassbinder, and Bausch. The three spaces vary in size, making the venue suitable for both small productions and larger staged works.
The company was founded in 1972 by Gabriele Salvatores and began by performing in social centers and alternative spaces around Milan. It only moved into its permanent home on Corso Buenos Aires in 2010, after the building was rebuilt to house the group.
The theater is known for staging works that speak directly to social questions, often placing international texts alongside classical ones. Some performances are held in languages other than Italian, which draws a mixed audience from across Milan and beyond.
The theater sits on one of Milan's busiest shopping streets, making it easy to reach by metro. Booking ahead is a good idea since the three auditoriums vary in capacity and some productions sell out quickly.
Gabriele Salvatores, who founded the company, later became a well-known film director and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1992 for Mediterraneo. The theater group he built in Milan continued on its own path, separate from his film career.
