Torre Vigliena, tower in Santa Croce Camerina, Italy
Torre Vigliena is a defensive tower standing on the coast at Punta Braccetto near Santa Croce Camerina in Sicily. The square stone structure originally had three levels and was equipped with cannons, though today only the ground floor survives along with remnants of water storage tanks and walkways.
The tower was built around 1607 on royal order to defend the coast against pirates from North Africa. It was armed with cannons and staffed by two soldiers under a captain's command who watched for approaching ships and alerted nearby settlements to danger.
Torre Vigliena takes its name from the Vigliena locality where it stands. Today the ruins sit quietly by the shore, serving as a physical link between visitors and the seafaring communities that once depended on such structures for protection and warning.
The ruins are easy to reach from main roads and there is no entrance fee to visit. There is little shelter on-site so it is best to come in good weather and bring comfortable shoes and water for the visit.
The tower was part of a network of three coastal watch towers around Santa Croce Camerina that worked together to monitor the sea. The strategic positions allowed watchers to spot ships from far away and quickly relay warnings to neighboring villages.
