Torre dei Galluzzi, Medieval defense tower in Bologna, Italy
The Torre dei Galluzzi is a medieval defense tower in Bologna rising to about 30 meters high with walls measuring roughly 3 meters thick at the base. The structure displays sturdy construction with solid stone that has supported the tower's weight across centuries.
The tower was built in 1257 and belonged to the Galluzzi family, who held significant power in Bologna and supported the papal cause during medieval conflicts. This connection to the church shaped the tower's political role in the city.
The tower displays Gothic features with a pointed arch above its entrance, setting it apart from other Bologna towers that have rounded arches. These architectural details shape the medieval character of the old city center.
The tower stands just steps away from Piazza Maggiore near the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini and remains easily accessible from the street. Visitors can view the tower from outside and examine its architecture at leisure.
The original entrance was positioned about 10 meters above ground and connected to a wooden house through removable walkways. This security system let residents control access easily and protect themselves in emergencies.
