San Paolo Maggiore, Bologna, Minor basilica in central Bologna, Italy
San Paolo Maggiore is a minor basilica in central Bologna featuring a brick and stone facade with statues of Saints Peter and Paul. The interior contains numerous artworks, including paintings by notable masters and frescoes that cover the vaults overhead.
Construction took place between 1606 and 1611 under the Barnabites with architect Ambrogio Magenta leading the design. The church gained its designation as a Minor Basilica through a papal decree in 1961.
The name honors the Apostle Paul, to whom this place is dedicated, reflecting a devotion that has deep roots in the city. Visitors can sense how the interior serves as a space for quiet reflection and prayer among the local faithful.
The basilica is easy to reach by public transport in central Bologna and sits in a lively neighborhood with nearby shops and cafes. Visiting during daylight hours is best for appreciating the details of the artwork in natural light.
The main altar is crowned with a bronze-decorated baldacchino topped by Corinthian columns and bearing plaques commissioned by a local nobleman. This ornate feature reflects the refined craftsmanship of the early Baroque period.
