San Paolo Maggiore, Bologna, Minor basilica in central Bologna, Italy
The San Paolo Maggiore features a brick and stone facade adorned with statues of Saint Peter and Paul by sculptors Domenico Maria Mirandola and G. Cruventi.
Built between 1606 and 1611 by the Barnabites under architect Ambrogio Magenta, the church received its designation as Minor Basilica from Pope John XIII in 1961.
The interior vaults display frescoes depicting Saint Paul at the Areopagus of Athens, created by brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Rolli in the seventeenth century.
Located at Via Carbonesi 18 in Bologna, the basilica contains numerous artworks, including paintings by Guercino and a marble sculptural group by Alessandro Algardi.
The main altar houses a bronze-decorated baldacchino with Corinthian columns and features plaques commissioned by Prince Spada in the seventeenth century.
