Torre del Barbarossa, Medieval bell tower in Seregno, Italy
Torre del Barbarossa is a bell tower built from stone and brick in the historic center of Seregno, displaying Roman-Gothic architectural features. The structure rises through several levels with a belfry chamber housing nine bronze bells.
The tower was built around 1100 and served as a strategic lookout during Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa's campaigns against Lombard cities. It gradually became a lasting landmark that witnessed the city's development over the centuries.
The bell tower has shaped the skyline of Seregno's old center for centuries and serves as a gathering point in the heart of the community. The nine bronze bells ring for various occasions, connecting residents with their local roots.
The tower stands in the central area of the old town and is easy to reach on foot. Extensive restoration work in the 1990s stabilized the structure and reinstalled the bells, making it accessible and safe for visitors today.
The tower displays rare Guelph architectural elements, and four of its bronze bells are originals from the earlier Church of San Vittore. These bells were preserved during restoration and still ring today as a connection to its medieval past.
