Temple of Heracles, Ancient Greek temple in Valle dei Templi, Italy
The Temple of Heracles stands with eight restored columns from its original thirty-eight, measuring 67 meters in length and 25.34 meters in width.
Construction of this Doric temple dates to the late 6th century BC, making it the oldest sanctuary in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.
Ancient writers Cicero and Titus Livy documented the temple's bronze statue of Hercules, which citizens would kiss during their prayers and offerings.
Visitors can explore the temple ruins, including the remains of a large altar on the eastern side and the visible three-step foundation structure.
The temple features internal stairs within its architecture that were used for roof maintenance, a characteristic element of Akragantine temple construction.
