Tratto di Pietralunga del Fiume Simeto, River section in Catania Province, Italy
The Pietralunga section of the Simeto River is a natural waterway flowing through three Sicilian municipalities in eastern Sicily. The area spans several hundred hectares and features rocky banks, inland water features, and distinctive geological formations shaped by volcanic activity.
The area played a role in 19th-century military history during Italy's unification period. A prominent general of that time used the river valley as a strategic route when crossing through Sicily during his campaign.
The State Forest Company manages this protected site, which received recognition as a Site of Community Interest with code ITA070025 in 2000.
The best time to visit is from spring through autumn when weather is stable and trails are easily walkable. Sturdy footwear and drinking water are essential, as the terrain is hilly and offers limited shade.
The river valley contains small mud volcanoes called Salinelle that emit water and salt minerals from underground. These rare geological features demonstrate that the area remains geologically active with ongoing subsurface processes.
