Santa Maria dell'Alto

Santa Maria dell'Alto displays three naves divided by stone pillars, with a monumental staircase leading to the main entrance portal.

Roger I of Sicily established this church in 1072, building it upon the remains of an ancient Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Hybla.

The church interior contains marble altars, Byzantine-style frescoes, and a collection of religious artifacts dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.

The church opens its doors to visitors following extensive renovations completed in 1992, after being closed throughout the 1950s.

The building underwent a complete orientation change in the 17th century, with its main facade relocated from west to east side.
