Villa Spera, Liberty style villa in Vomero district, Naples, Italy

Villa Spera is a three-story house with pale red brick walls, arched windows with prominent columns, and Renaissance-inspired decorative elements throughout its irregular rectangular structure. The building combines Liberty style with medieval motifs, creating a distinctive architectural composition.

Architect Adolfo Avena designed Villa Spera in 1922 during a period when this district was reshaping its architectural character. The project marked a shift in building styles and brought Liberty elements into the developing neighborhood.

The facade displays esoteric symbols including carved winged caduceus with stylized horse heads, reflecting early 20th-century artistic beliefs. These decorative elements tell of the philosophical ideas that shaped design during this period.

The villa sits at the end of Via Tasso near Piazza Santo Stefano in an elevated location. It is walkable to reach, and the surroundings offer views toward Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples.

An external spiral staircase wraps around the building, visible through glass panels and giving the structure a sense of rotational movement. Stained glass windows complement this innovative stair design, creating a sequence of colored light effects.
