Conterno Fantino, winery in Monforte d'Alba, Italy
Conterno Fantino is a winery on a hillside in Monforte d'Alba, within the Langhe district of Piedmont, Italy. The property includes a modern cellar with steel tanks and French oak barrels, surrounded by rows of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay vines that follow the slopes.
The estate was founded through a partnership between Guido Fantino and brothers Diego and Claudio Conterno. Since then, the operation has grown while keeping its focus on shorter skin contact during fermentation and aging in small French barrels.
Around six in the evening, the team gathers at the top of the hill to talk about the day, share news, or mark a birthday. This daily meeting is a visible habit that shows how the work in the vines and the work in the cellar stay connected through the people who do both.
A visit works best if you arrive during daylight hours, when the rows of vines and the slope above the cellar are easy to see and walk around. Wear sturdy shoes because the ground between the vineyard rows can be uneven and sometimes muddy after rain.
Despite the scale of its production, the winery reuses rainwater around the property and grows grass naturally between the vine rows. These routine practices are easy to miss while tasting, but they shape the look of the soil and the edges of the vineyard.
