Tempio Ossario dei Caduti d'Italia

The Tempio Ossario dei Caduti d'Italia is a memorial church in Udine with a prominent dome and four sculptures on its facade representing different military branches: navy, air force, army, and Alpine troops. The building combines religious and military architecture into a unified monument.

Built in 1931, the church holds the remains of around 25,000 Italian soldiers who died in World War I between the Isonzo and Tagliamento rivers. It was created in response to the enormous losses this region experienced during the war.

This temple serves as both a parish church dedicated to Saint Nicholas and a place where people come to honor those who died in war. Visitors experience it as a sacred space where remembrance and religious faith come together.

The building houses Italy's largest crypt with two collective tombs for about 5,600 unidentified soldiers and niches for named military personnel. This makes it one of the country's most significant repositories for war casualties.
