House of Charred Furniture, Roman domus in Herculaneum, Italy
The House of Charred Furniture features an atrium with an upper gallery supported by columns, connecting to multiple decorated rooms and a garden.
The structure dates back to the Samnite period and underwent extensive renovations during Emperor Claudius's reign, incorporating third and fourth-style architectural elements.
The tablinum contains a white mosaic floor with black borders and displays red and yellow panels depicting figures that represent Roman artistic preferences.
Visitors can access the entrance hall from Cardo IV, leading directly to the atrium and connecting to various rooms through a network of passages.
The excavation revealed preserved charred remains of a wooden dining couch, demonstrating the Roman practice of reclining during meals.
