Mirabello Castle

Mirabello Castle is a fortress in Pavia that survives with a single remaining wing featuring a balcony supported by arches and a brick structure spanning two floors. The complex sits within Parco Visconteo and stands as a notable remnant from the medieval period.

The fortress was built between 1325 and 1341 by the Fiamberti family and came into the possession of Galeazzo II Visconti in the 1360s. This acquisition marked the start of a new chapter as a center of Visconti control over the region.

The castle once served as the administrative hub for the Park Captain, who oversaw the Visconti family's vast hunting grounds and leisure estate. This role demonstrates how central the location was to local governance and aristocratic life.

The grounds offer parking for approximately 50 vehicles and are located at Via Mirabello 165 near other significant buildings such as the Certosa di Pavia. The central location makes it easy for visitors to explore multiple sites during a visit to the area.

A fresco in San Teodoro church created by Bernardino Lanzani in the early 1500s depicts the castle within its landscape setting. This artwork provides a valuable visual record of how the site appeared during the Renaissance.
