Castello di Salvaterra

Castello di Salvaterra is a medieval fortress in Iglesias featuring a rectangular layout with multiple towers positioned at key points. The structure combines original defensive elements with later additions from different periods.

The fortress was built in the late 13th century under Pisan rule and was captured by Aragonese forces in 1324. After this conquest, the structure underwent several modifications that shaped its later form.

The castle exemplifies medieval military design that played a key role in Sardinian defense strategies. Visitors can still observe the solid construction and defensive features that made this structure important for the region.

The site is accessible to visitors with maintained paths to explore the building and its layouts. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes since some areas have uneven ground.

A historical document from 1358 shows the fortress in its original form before later modifications. In the 19th century the site was merged with a neo-Gothic villa and glass factory, completely changing its purpose.
